Historical Picture of the Day- "I have Returned."- Leyte Gulf
This historical picture of the day is a bit early in terms of date and time. However, October 20, 1944 marks the exact date when the "men of MacArthur have returned." And return they did! Here General MacArthur is shown landing on the beachhead, fulfilling his promise that he would return to the Philippines and liberate them from the imperial Japanese. Leyte was home to one of the largest Naval battles in history between the U.S. Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy. My grandfather, Lyle Vance Stepleton, Sr. was awarded the silver star for almost single-handedly destroying a Japanese pill box from destroying his platoon. It was a different time in American history, a time when high-starred generals were renowned, much more than today's military.
